Beauty From Within
What makes you feel beautiful? Is it the expensive clothes and jewelry you wear? Maybe it’s the fancy makeup, or even the gorgeous hair. Getting all made up always makes a girl feel just that much more beautiful. Although, what I really want to know is what makes you feel not so beautiful? Is it the fat hanging over your favorite pair of jeans? That pimple on your face that just won’t go away? Or the way you look right when you wake up? Unfortunately, girls deal with insecurities every day, making them feel less than that one “picture perfect” girl standing in the middle of the room seeming to have everything put together. We think that we need to look a certain way to be able to feel and look beautiful.
For me, it takes a lot to feel beautiful. I can’t just get up and get going with my day. I have to wash my face, brush my teeth, take my glasses off and put my contacts in, pick the perfect jewelry, put makeup on to cover my “flaws,” make sure my hair is just right, and have an outfit that will stand out. I’m definitely the girl who takes an hour or more to get ready and am usually ALWAYS late to everything. Why you may ask? Because i will feel insecure if I don’t make myself look the way the world expects me to look.
I recently was listening to a sermon spoken directly to women of God by Senior Pastor Roy Rhodes at Abundant Life Community Church. I believe that every person gets something different out of a sermon, so here's what I got out of this specific one. Every woman sees the “perfect” body image and feels like she needs to do whatever it takes to make herself exactly like that so the world will consider her beautiful. BUT what we really should be focusing on is the image we present to God.
Let me be harsh for a second. It’s not about the perfect hair, the pretty face, and the skinny waist. It's about what is underneath all of that. I hate to break it to you, but God could care less about what you look like on the outside. He cares about your INNER beauty. He doesn’t want to see you all made up; although He may think you do look stunning, what He wants to see is the beauty you’re hiding within. The kindness in your heart, the encouragement you can put out, putting Him first in everything, serving Him with a smile, and growing into that Proverbs 31 woman he has created YOU to be.
Why do we worry about what the world wants us to look like when it can’t even make up its mind on the definition of beautiful? The “perfect” body image has changed so much through the decades. It’s been tall. It’s been short. It’s been skinny and it’s been curvy. So why can’t everyone just be beautiful? And not be beautiful just by the way they look, or even at all, but by the way they act, think, talk, encourage, and love like Jesus.
1 Samuel 16:7 says this “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Right there. It says it right there. God does not look at your outward appearance, your beauty on the outside. He wants you to be beautiful on the inside and to be all that He has created you to be.
Let me say this last thing and then I’ll wrap this up. I recently have been realizing something, maybe something a little hard for me to admit. I care so much about my outward appearance, about what boys and people will think when they see me walk by. Do I look skinny enough? Does my hair look just right? Is my outfit flattering to me? Did I do my makeup well enough? But why am I not concerned about my inner beauty that much? Why am I not worried about what people will think of me when they speak to me and hear my heart from within? I should be focusing more on the beauty that lies within and only worry about how the one true Father views me as. Because guess what? Our outer beauty only lasts so long, but our inner beauty lasts forever :)
I feel this is so important to understand, especially in the years we are in right now. YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL. No matter what anyone says, you are beautifully and wonderfully made and God loves you for YOU. Not for how you look, not for what clothes you wear, not for what color your hair is, not for how much or how little makeup you wear, not for how tall, skinny, curvy, or short you are, but for your inner beauty!! Your heart! Your mind! Your spirit! Your love! He loves you! He wants you! He thinks you are beautiful!! And I do too. Girl, never forget who you are in Christ and that He made you just the way He wants you to be! You’re beautiful, you’re anointed, you’re wonderfully made, and you are never alone!!
